The name Xabi Alonso has been circling Anfield for years, with one report suggesting that his potential appointment at Liverpool is no longer fantasy/
The Spaniard, who spent five trophy-laden years as a Liverpool player before going on to forge one of the most exciting managerial careers in European football, left Real Madrid by mutual consent in January after a turbulent eight-month stint that ended with a Spanish Super Cup defeat.
Since then, he has been a free agent and Liverpool have reportedly been paying close attention.
With Arne Slot’s second season unravelling after last year’s title triumph, and with key figures at boardroom level out of contract in 2027, the club appears to be quietly building a case for a full reset.
According to journalist Romain Molina, Alonso is not just a rumour – he is the plan.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Spaniard is being labeled as the top priority for Liverpool in the summer:
“The management has handled the hot topics very well, especially with Salah and so on. Overall this year they have shown a lot of composure, they have supported the coach and everything. Honestly, well done to them.”
They proved that in difficult times, the hierarchy must be respected. However, as you know, they have been working on Alonso for a very long time.”
“It was announced when he was already at Real Madrid. It’s no secret because Slot, in all likelihood, will not be on the Liverpool bench next year.”
“The management has been won over by Xabi Alonso for a very long time. there is the idea of saying given the squad they have with such a focus on Florian Wirtz, it’s exactly when Alonso can come in and be the ‘master’ of all of this.”
The Alonso romance has always been there in the background at Liverpool, but Molina’s analysis suggests there is a structured plan being put in motion behind closed doors.
For now, Slot remains in the dugout, and the season is not yet done. But if Molina is to be believed, the next chapter at Anfield already has its author.
