The conversation around a fifth Premier League Champions League spot has been going on for months — and it turns out the answer could arrive as soon as this week.

England’s clubs have been performing strongly across European competition (Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League) this season, and the numbers are starting to do the talking.

Arsenal and Liverpool secured their places in the quarter-finals with victories over Bayer Leverkusen and Galatasaray respectively, while Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have also progressed to the last eight of the Europa League and Crystal Palace has done the same in the Conference League, meaning five Premier League sides remain in European competition.

UEFA’s coefficient table, which ranks national leagues based on how their clubs perform collectively in European competition, currently shows England sitting comfortably clear at the top, averaging 24.791 points – well ahead of Spain in second place on 20.281.

If England stays in that top-two position come the end of the season, the Premier League’s fifth-placed team earns an automatic Champions League berth for 2026/27. That’s no longer just a possibility – it’s nearly a formality.

According to the Premier League, England only needs a single draw from any one of the five quarter-final legs involving Premier League clubs this week to mathematically guarantee that top-two finish. In other words, the fifth spot could be officially locked in before the week is out.

Liverpool travel to Paris on Wednesday night to face PSG at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

A win in Paris not only boosts Liverpool’s chances of reaching the semi-finals – it would also contribute precious coefficient points to England’s tally, potentially sealing the deal on that extra UCL place on the night. Even a draw would do it.

But Liverpool don’t have to do it alone. Arsenal face Sporting CP in Lisbon on Tuesday, and a positive result there could get the job done even before Liverpool kick off.

On top of that, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are both in Europa League quarter-final action this week, while Crystal Palace compete in the Conference League — any draw or win from those ties counts too.

So it looks almost guaranteed that Liverpool can qualify for next season’s Champions League season, but they still need to do their bit and finish in at least fifth place with seven games in the Premier League remaining.
