Two-time Premier League winner admits he had a Leeds United trial before Man United success

Leeds United were the first club to take a look at midfielder Darron Gibson before he went on to win the Premier League with Manchester United.

It is a small detail, but one that stands out when you look at how Gibson’s career unfolded. Before the trophies, before Old Trafford, and before establishing himself in the Premier League, Leeds had the first opportunity to see him up close.

What followed was a career that included two Premier League titles and over 250 senior appearances with the likes of Man United, Everton and Sunderland.

Are you concerned if Leeds face a relegation scrap without Anton Stach?

Not one for the faint-hearted.

Leeds saw him first but did not take him on. Gibson himself has confirmed the order of events when discussing his early pathway into English football, during an interview with United By Association.

“I went to I think Leeds was the first one then Sunderland, Newcastle, Man City, Arsenal, United was actually the last one I came over to see. Yeah.”

From Leeds United trialist to Premier League winner

That puts Leeds right at the start of a trial run that included several of the biggest clubs in the country. They were not alone in looking at him, but they were first.

There is no evidence Leeds made a move beyond that initial look. What is clear is that Manchester United, who saw him last, were the club that acted decisively and brought him in.

Gibson’s time at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson turned him into a player with a trophy cabinet that far outweighs his individual profile.

He made 60 appearances for United and scored 10 goals, often used as a reliable squad option in midfield. He was not a headline star, but he was trusted in a system that demanded consistency.

That role brought major success. Gibson was part of squads that won the Premier League twice, along with three League Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup.

It underlines the level he reached after that early round of trials. Leeds saw a young midfielder. United developed a player who contributed to title-winning sides.

A solid Premier League career built from that platform

After leaving Old Trafford, Gibson went on to build a respectable top-flight career, most notably with Everton.

Across his career, he made 252 senior appearances, including 94 in the Premier League, scoring five goals at that level. His spell at Everton delivered regular minutes before injuries disrupted his momentum.

He also earned 27 caps for the Republic of Ireland, adding international recognition to a career that started with clubs assessing his potential.

Who is your Leeds Player of the Season?

Gibson was never among the league’s elite midfielders, but he reached a level that many do not. More importantly, he was part of one of the most successful teams of his era.

That is where the Leeds angle becomes difficult to ignore. They had the first look at a player who would go on to win the biggest prize in English football, but they were not the club that took the next step.

In isolation, a trial means little. Clubs look at countless players who never sign. But in this case, the outcome is clear. Leeds saw Gibson first. Manchester United signed him. The rest of his career followed from that decision.
