Joey Barton will face trial in September after pleading not guilty to an alleged assault outside a golf club. Barton, 43, is accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent following an incident near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on Merseyside.

Liverpool Echo previously reported that former football manager Kevin Lynch was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition following an alleged altercation. Lynch had managed Prescot Cables, Marine and City of Liverpool FC and is also the founder and headteacher of NexGen Academy in Dovecoat, a school for children with additional needs.

On Tuesday morning, Former Newcastle United midfielder Barton appeared at the Liverpool Crown Court via video link from HMP Liverpool wearing a grey Columbia tracksuit top and glasses, sporting short greying hair and a goatee. His co-defendant Gary O'Grady, 50, of Seel Road in Huyton, faced the same charge and was present in court.

Barton pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent against Kevin Lynch on March 8, 2026. O'Grady was not arraigned today upon his request from his defence counsel, and will face a further hearing on June 3.

Barton was remanded into custody until his trial later this year. Judge Andrew Menary KC said: "In relation to both defendants, Mr Barton and Mr O'Grady, I will fix a trial date, beginning on September 1 this year.

The next hearing so far as you are concerned, Mr O'Grady, will be heard on the June 3. You are required to be here on that date.

"Mr Barton, you are not required for that hearing. Mr Barton, you must remain in custody. In your case, Mr O’Grady, I renew your bail on the same conditions as previously.

"That concludes this hearing. Mr O'Grady, you are free to go. Mr Brady, you are free to go with the officer."
