When Liverpool sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen last summer, many Reds fans thought it would only be a matter of time before the club came calling again.
The academy graduate, who spent nearly 17 years at Anfield before making his senior debut in August 2023, departed in a deal worth up to £35 million -with an initial fee of £30 million – making him the most expensive signing in Leverkusen’s history at the time.
It was a bittersweet farewell for a player who had been part of the squad that delivered the 2024/25 Premier League title, yet found himself unable to hold down a starting spot under Arne Slot after a difficult opening to the campaign.
Crucially, Liverpool made sure to protect their position, inserting a buy-back clause into the agreement.
According to multiple reports, that clause is set at €80 million and can be exercised until the end of May 2026.
A two-tier structure has also been reported, with a reduced €65 million option reportedly available from 2027. With Quansah having gone on to establish himself as a consistent starter in Germany – racking up 32 appearances and four goals for Leverkusen – speculation over a potential Anfield return was seemingly gathering pace as recently as March.
However, any notion that Liverpool is actively pushing to trigger that clause has been firmly cooled by a fresh update from Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg:
“Liverpool still have the option to activate a buy-back clause for Jarell Quansah until the end of May, set at €80 million,” he wrote on X.
“So far, however, Leverkusen have received no indication – neither from the player nor from Liverpool. LFC‘s current focus is on extending Ibrahima Konate’s contract.”
The reason, according to Plettenberg, is straightforward: Liverpool’s current focus is not on Quansah at all – it is on extending Ibrahima Konate’s contract.
The French centre-back’s deal expires at the end of the season, and negotiations have been ongoing for the better part of 18 months. The Athletic reported last week that is more likely that Konate remains at Anfield.
The 26-year-old, who earns around £150,000 per week, is believed to be pushing for a significant pay rise that reflects his standing as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
