Marcus Rashford 'didn't deserve' Barcelona move as Man Utd icon predicts next move

Teddy Sheringham believes Marcus Rashford "didn't deserve" his switch to Barcelona but has backed the forward to remain in Spain on a permanent basis.

The Manchester United academy graduate made the move to the Nou Camp on loan back in the summer when it became clear he had no future under Ruben Amorim. The pair did not see eye-to-eye and, after being frozen out for a period, Rashford had to look elsewhere.

Barcelona remain one of Europe's powerhouses and could land a La Liga-Champions League double this term - they chose to pursue Rashford despite the Englishman scoring just seven times for the Red Devils last term. The season prior to that he'd scored only eight.

Rashford has been linked with Barcelona in the past, but that was at a time when he was in peak form. He's found it hard to continue producing his best football, but that didn't stop the Spanish side pursuing him - which Sheringham admits was an "unbelievable move."

He told told BestBettingSites: "I don’t think it’s about the managers - it’s more about what Marcus wants to do. He’s gone over to Barcelona and, for me, he’s got an unbelievable move - didn’t deserve it - but he’s gone there and changed his mentality.

"It seems like Barcelona want to sign him, so if they do, they probably will. That would make it quite clear he doesn’t want to come back to United, so he’ll probably end up getting what he wants.

"I’ve not seen so much Spanish football, but when he came to Newcastle earlier in the season, in the group stage, he set the place alight. He scored a rocket — he got two that night — and had a really good impact.

"He’s done very well there, and if they want to sign him, he’s obviously doing very well for them and their hierarchy, so that’s probably where he’ll end up."

Barcelona reportedly have the option to sign Rashford for £26million this summer. He's scored 11 times in 40 outings for the Catalans as he looks to add more silverware to his CV, but this would be the first league title of his career if Barcelona do get over the line.

Despite Amorim's departure United's stance on Rashford has not drastically changed. They spent more than £200m on their frontline in the summer with Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha all proving to be successes this term. It would leave Rashford down the pecking order and the Manchester outfit may seek to offload him to aid their summer business.
