“We believe in the manager” – Florian Wirtz offers public backing to Arne Slot

Florian Wirtz has insisted that Liverpool’s dressing room still believes in Arne Slot as their head coach amid increasing pressure on the Dutchman’s position.

With Slot overseeing the 15th defeat of the season over the weekend, there has been a noticeable shift in talk over the Dutchman’s future at Anfield.

Former Red Xabi Alonso has been readily linked having left Real Madrid in mid-January, but Slot has maintained that he remains in discussions for the club’s transfer plans in the summer.

With Liverpool’s season hinging on their tie against PSG in the Champions League, Wirtz was asked if the dressing room still believes in Slot as their head coach.

“Yes, of course,” Wirtz responded when asked if the team are still playing for Slot. “We believe in the manager, the team should believe in the manager because they won the league last season.

“We had a lot of good games this season, and as I said before, we wanted it to be better, but it is what it is now. We still have things to play for.

“Everything I can say to that is that we believe in the manager, and try to give our best on the pitch tomorrow.”

Wirtz’s response to the question was swift, showing little hesitation in offering Slot the public backing that has waned in the media and among supporters.

The German did, however, bizarrely admit that he had not heard Virgil van Dijk‘s comments about the team giving up, and that he did not “agree directly.”

“I didn’t know he said this,” Wirtz said. “I would not agree directly, we still tried to create chances to turn the game around.”
