Leeds United’s 22/23 season is best forgotten for many involved. But, it was the first exposure to senior football for Michael Skubala, who hasn’t looked back since.
The coaching on display during our 22/23 relegation season was truly nowhere near good enough. Jesse Marsch was given plenty of time to put things right, but was eventually replaced by Javi Gracia in February 2023, who was then replaced by Sam Allardyce in May.
Between Marsch and Gracia was an interim spell for Michael Skubala. The then-U21 coach took charge of three games, before reverting to a first team coaching role, then leaving later in 2023 for a permanent management role at Lincoln City.
Taking over Lincoln in November 2023, Skubala’s first season with the Imps fell agonisingly short of the playoffs, ending up in seventh and two points off the top six.
A slight regression into 11th followed in the 24/25 season. However, this current season has been one to remember for the former Leeds coach and Lincoln City.
Going toe-to-toe with Cardiff City in the fight for the League One title, they’ve enjoyed remarkable 24-game unbeaten run stretching back to mid-November. In that time, Skubala has picked up 62 out of a possible 72 points.
The latest maximum sealed promotion to the Championship, Lincoln’s first season back in the second tier in 65 years.
Remarkable rise continues for Michael Skubala after Leeds United stint
You’d be forgiven for having forgotten what unfolded in Skubala’s three Leeds games as interim manager. We faced Manchester United twice in a week, drawing 2-2 at Old Trafford, before losing 2-0 at Elland Road. Then, were we beaten 1-0 at Everton.
However, you could clearly see the club thought highly of him to not only appoint him, but to promote him into the first team that season.
He’s since left and proven his coaching nous in the EFL. And, he is now set for a fully deserved crack at the Championship next season.
Having started out as a futsal coach, it’s really interesting to see Skubala’s career progressing. Let’s just hope we’re not reuniting with him in August in the Championship.
