Manchester United have been told where they should begin when it comes to clearing out talent this summer. With interim boss Michael Carrick at the helm, it remains to be seen who'll be in the dugout by the time the Red Devils begin chasing new signings.

While midfield is certainly the area of the pitch where United are likely to focus much of their summer spending, outgoings will also be of importance to free up cash and spaces in their squad.

Scholes didn't hold back in stating United require a mass clear out this summer after urging his former side to part ways with eight first-team players. During a 'keep or sell' segment on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, alongside ex-colleague Nicky Butt and TV personality Paddy McGuinness, the 11-time league winner rattled off the sell verdict more times than some viewers may have thought.

The crop of players include Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee. While the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui could depart the club after a reduction in playing time this season, Maguire penned a new deal on Tuesday.

Harry Maguire decision

Having faced an uncertain future with his contract expiring at the end of the season, Maguire has now signed a new one-year deal with Manchester United. The Red Devils also have the option to extend the England defender's deal by a further year.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a resurgence under interim manager Carrick with United rising to third in the table with Maguire playing a key role. Speaking after inking his new contract, Maguire said: "Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour.

"It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day. I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.

"You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us."
