**Kieran Trippier has announced his decision to leave Newcastle United when his contract expires at the end of the season.**
The 35-year-old announced over the weekend that his time at Newcastle will come to an end this summer after four and a half years on Tyneside.
It can never be underestimated just how huge a signing Trippier was for Newcastle when he arrived. [Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben highlighted it with a post on social medi](https://www.nufcblog.co.uk/2026/04/05/jamie-reuben-outlines-importance-of-kieran-trippier-following-exit-announcement/)a, saying that Trippier came when nobody else would. His arrival was the catalyst for the Magpies’ Houdini act.
Without Trippier taking a chance on the club when they were almost certain for relegation, who knows if any of the other January signings would have followed? Well, except for Dan Burn, he’d have walked from Brighton to Newcastle if he was asked to.
When he becomes a free agent in the summer, there’s still expected to be interest from the Premier League. Everton have long been admirers of Trippier, and age means nothing to the Toffees. They kept Ashley Young until his 70th birthday.
However, [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/kieran-trippier-decides-on-next-move-after-newcastle-as-exit-announced/) claims that Trippier is likely to prefer a move abroad, with clubs in the MLS and Saudi Pro League keen on the veteran defender.
Tripps came to Newcastle when he was feeling homesick while playing in Spain, but things have changed dramatically for him since then, so a move abroad could appeal.
Normally, we don’t put a great deal of stock in the story when Football Insider comes out with “sources say”, but this is a story that just makes sense. It could be total guesswork, but it’s based on evidence that we believe gives this some credibility.
After his marriage fell apart, there seemed to be a feeling that Trippier wanted to move away from the region and start again. Fortunately for Newcastle, he got his head together and stayed at the club, and got refocused on his football.
However, now, with an opportunity for a clean break, it just makes sense that he’d want to put some distance between himself and the memories. We’d imagine he’d do quite well in the MLS and is probably on the blower to David Beckham for a move to Inter Miami. Although I can’t imagine what a newly single man with a shedload of money could possibly get up to in Miami.
