Liverpool issue major update on ex-Newcastle United star Alexander Isak ahead of PSG match

Former Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak is in line to make his first Liverpool appearance since December.

The former Newcastle United striker hasn’t featured since sustaining a fibula fracture whilst scoring a goal in the Reds’ 2-1 Premier League win at Tottenham Hotspur on December 20.

Isak moved to Anfield for a British record £130million last summer and prior to his injury had struggled to hit the ground running with just three goals in 16 appearances.

There has been little sympathy for Isak on Tyneside. The 26-year-old was regarded as a hero after scoring against the Reds in the Carabao Cup final but tarnished his legacy by going on strike to force his exit.

The Sweden international resumed first-team training last week but wasn’t risked for Liverpool’s 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Manchester City on Saturday.

He will, however, be available for the visit to Paris this evening, with boss Arne Slot confirming his place on the bench.

"He's finished close to a week of team sessions now, so he can play a part, otherwise I wouldn't take him,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference.

"I decided not to take him to the Etihad because we thought, after we had talks with the player and the medical staff, that we couldn't get a performance out of him.

"Now, we think we can get a performance out of him... but not to start, let's be clear."
