Newcastle United face PSG transfer battle as French club contract player

Newcastle United

Newcastle United’s pursuit of highly rated centre-back Karim Coulibaly has hit a major transfer obstacle, Paris Saint-Germain.

German newspaper Sport BILD report that the French giants and reigning European champions have moved in the race for the Werder Bremen sensation.

According to their information, PSG have now made direct contact with the player’s camp regarding a transfer in the summer.

Why Coulibaly is wanted in Europe

Karim Coulibaly has exploded in the Bundesliga this season, developing quickly into a potential star of the future and €22m rated stand out player.

His rise has been so dramatic that Werder Bremen, who are battling financial pressures, now see him as their golden ticket to stabilising the club.

Suitors are already lining up, with Newcastle firmly among them. A report at the end of March insisted that the Magpies were firmly in talks about a move.

That was backed up earlier this week with another report insisting that Newcastle were one of several sides to have sent officials. A transfer is very much on the cards for Coulibaly this summer.

PSG contact puts Newcastle United on back foot

But only one club have made a concrete move and that is PSG. Sport BILD report that the French giants have opened communication with Karim Coulibaly’s representatives.

They have reportedly signalled a clear intent to make him a long-term defensive pillar. For Newcastle, that could be a worst-case scenario.

PSG have clear advantages over the competition. They offer a guaranteed pathway for French talents, Champions League football and a financial package that few other clubs can compete with.

Newcastle can still make their own offer, of course, but they will need to move decisively and sell the project hard when they do.

Werder Bremen ready to sell

Either way, Werder Bremen need a sale this summer. Karim Coulibaly is their most saleable asset and they expect around €40-50m for him.

With PSG now firmly in the mix, that could force other suitors to step up their interest to avoid missing out. Newcastle will need to be one of them.

They’ve identified the youngster as a future defensive cornerstone. But they now risk losing him to one of Europe’s elite if they don’t move quickly.
