Odysseas Vlachodimos joined Newcastle United as part of the deal that saw Elliot Anderson leave for Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle United goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, on loan at Sevilla, has admitted to feeling angry towards his parent club.
Signed in 2024 as part of the PSR fudge that saw Elliot Anderson join Nottingham Forest, the Greek international has played just 45 minutes for the Magpies. With a potential Premier League points deduction pending, Newcastle signed Vlachodimos for £20million.
Anderson - now an England international and seasoned top-flight star - headed in the opposite direction for £35million. This has proven to be a bitter pill to swallow for Newcastle given the midfielder’s meteoric rise.
Odysseas Vlachodimos ‘angry’ at Newcastle United
However, Vlachodimos - now on loan at Sevilla - believes he was also a victim of the situation. The 31-year-old previously told the i that his plan was to fight for the No.1 spot on Tyneside.
Ultimately, that was never likely to happen, with Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka ahead of him in the pecking order. His sole appearance came in the 1-0 Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon - which netted him a winners’ medal at Wembley five months later.
Speaking to Greek outlet Athletiko (via Sport Witness), the goalkeeper has hit out at Newcastle for changing his initial plan. Vlachodimos also highlighted the behind-the-scenes work he did at the Magpies despite his little game time.
“There was a plan for me,” he said. “A week before the first match, the plan changed and the things they had told me didn’t happen. Despite this, I felt very good and so did my family at Newcastle. The thought came that you have to give something extra every day. That’s what I tried to do.
“From morning to noon, I was in the gym. Every day I wanted to do something different. I certainly wasn’t happy because I wasn’t playing. They told me something else. I was angry, but I worked.
“Ultimately, I do it for myself, I don’t do it for them. Every footballer wants to play. I had the goal of going to the World Cup with the national team and that was what kept me going.”
Odysseas Vlachodimos open to Sevilla switch
Vlachodimos has played 27 times for Sevilla during his loan spell this season. They sit just two points above the La Liga drop zone with eight games remaining.
In February, Vlachodimos - who has two years to run on his Newcastle contract - left the door open for a permanent switch. He said: “I’m very happy at Sevilla. I think it’s clear that I enjoy playing every match with this team. I’ll try to give my best every day, and that makes me feel very happy.
“I spoke with the manager, the president, and the sporting director about the club’s situation in La Liga, but for me, the most important thing from day one is that this experience has been a gift since I arrived.
“I just wanted to get back to playing and be able to give my all to the team. This place is exactly as I imagined it.”
