Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final with Paris Saint-Germain begins on Wednesday night, and Arne Slot may need luck on his side more than once if the Reds are to keep their European run going. The last time the sides met at this stage of the competition, Liverpool snatched a memorable 1-0 win at the Parc des Princes, with Harvey Elliott proving the catalyst. PSG, however, would have the final word, silencing Anfield as they went through on penalties.

Liverpool arrive in Paris short on confidence after back-to-back defeats to Brighton and Manchester City, before City’s ruthless FA Cup win underlined the gap on the day. Any hope that the international break might steady the ship disappeared quickly at the Etihad, where an Erling Haaland hat-trick and an Antoine Semenyo chip helped send City into the semi-finals with a 4-0 victory.

Virgil van Dijk’s claim that Liverpool “gave up” only fuelled the sense of unease around the squad and Slot, whose position is under increasing scrutiny even if he remains in place for now. The Dutchman has now overseen 15 defeats in all competitions which is Liverpool’s highest in a season since 2014-15 under Brendan Rodgers and the Reds have won just one of their last five matches, even if that success was an emphatic Champions League win over Galatasaray.

Away from home, the picture is even bleaker. Liverpool have lost four of their last five on the road in all competitions, with only Wolves beaten during that spell.

This tie pits reigning domestic champions against one another, but the momentum sits firmly with PSG. Liverpool look set to surrender their Premier League crown with little resistance, while Luis Enrique’s side have reasserted control in Ligue 1, moving four points clear of Lens at the summit — and still holding a game in hand.

PSG’s form is strong too, having made it four consecutive wins with a 3-1 victory over Toulouse, highlighted by an Ousmane Dembele double. Two of those recent wins also came against an underwhelming Chelsea.

In Europe, the French champions have been just as convincing, progressing from each of their last four Champions League quarter-finals and going seven games unbeaten against English opponents in the competition, winning five of those matches. Liverpool can at least draw on a couple of small positives: they were the last Premier League side to overcome PSG in Europe, and the UEFA head-to-head stands level at three wins apiece — slender, but something for the travelling support to cling to.
