Opinion: Everton's interest in Shea Charles isn't surprising after what David Moyes previously…

Everton have joined the race for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles.

Since leaving Manchester City during the summer of 2023, Shea Charles has established himself as one of the best players in the Championship.

Everton scouts have been watching Charles in recent weeks and are exploring a £20m deal for the 22-year-old midfielder.

Would this be a good signing on a one-year deal? 🤔

Everton’s interest in the Northern Ireland international isn’t surprising at all, given what David Moyes has previously said.

David Moyes wants Everton to recruit from the Championship

Speaking back in 2025, Moyes explained that he wants Everton to look at some of the best talent in the Championship, so the interest in Charles is very believable.

“I know we’re in a world where we can pick players from any continent to play in the Premier League,” the Everton manager stated.

“A long time ago, it wasn’t as easy and maybe people didn’t look as far. We continue to look closer to home, which is the Championship.

“Last year, the Championship produced some incredible players like (Morgan) Rogers, (Adam) Wharton, (Jaden) Philogene possibly.

“The Championship is always a place we should be looking to see.”

As well as Charles, Everton are also interested in Tom Atcheson, who plies his trade in the second tier for Blackburn Rovers.

Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney has also been linked to the Hill Dickinson Stadium after his talismanic season for the promotion hopefuls.

With that said, Toffees supporters should expect at least one recruit from the Championship this summer transfer window.
