Leeds United hero 'keen' to join Patrick Bamford as summer transfer stance revealed

Kalvin Phillips is one of several former Leeds United stars already at Sheffield United.

Leeds United 2019/20 promotion hero Kalvin Phillips is reportedly keen on extending his Sheffield United loan stay into next season.

Phillips made the surprise move to Bramall Lane on deadline day of the January transfer window, joining Sheffield United on loan for the remainder of the season. The midfielder dropped into the Championship in a bid to revive his stalling career at Manchester City, which included unsuccessful temporary spells at West Ham and Ipswich Town.

The YEP’s sister site The Star now reports that Phillips could return to Sheffield United on loan again this summer, with both parties open to extending his stay at Bramall Lane. The former Leeds midfielder is believed to be keen on another year with the Blades, having been given a ‘new lease of life’ under Chris Wilder.

Phillips has been able to live much closer to his Leeds-based family since the move from Manchester, another factor believed to be influencing his stance. The former England Player of the Year is not thought to be open to a European move and will have one year remaining on his Manchester City contract come summer.

Despite the red card and subsequent injury, the report claims Sheffield United would also be keen on another loan move. Bramall Lane chiefs are said to be impressed with Phillips’ ‘attitude’ and ‘humility’, although they will once again only be able to afford a portion of the City star’s huge wages.

Phillips is also believed to have had a positive impact on younger squad members, particularly those in midfield such as Oliver Arblaster and Sydie Peck, who are 22 and 21 years old respectively. A loan extension will likely depend on City’s openness to another financial compromise.

Should Phillips return to Sheffield United this summer, he will get to enjoy another full season playing and training alongside former Elland Road teammate Patrick Bamford. The pair spent two years together in the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa, winning the 2019/20 title before each enjoyed outstanding Premier League campaigns in 2020/21.

Bamford joined Sheffield United as a free agent on a short-term contract in November, following his summer Leeds exit. The experienced striker impressed enough to earn an 18-month deal in January and will remain at Bramall Lane until the end of next season.

He is currently the Blades’ top-scorer in the Championship, with nine goals in 23 appearances, 17 of which have been starts. Also at Bramall Lane currently are 2024/25 Championship title-winner Joe Rothwell, Thorp Arch academy graduate Jamie Shackleton and 2021 Whites signing Leo Hjelde.
