Rangers are eyeing a move to sign a Liverpool sensation this summer as James Tavernier edges closer to leaving Ibrox, according to Football Insider.
The Light Blues have had a brilliant second half of the season under Danny Rohl since he took over from Russell Martin as manager, and the team currently sit second in the Scottish Premiership table, just one point behind league leaders Hearts with six games remaining.
With the season beginning to wind down despite how close the title race is, plans are being made in Glasgow for the upcoming transfer window, and a big change could be on the cards in the defence.
James Tavernier Edging Towards Rangers Exit
Rangers captain James Tavernier protests
Rangers are expecting to be busy in the transfer window, but they may now be about to see their influential captain and club legend Tavernier depart.
The veteran right-back is out of contract at the end of the season, but so far there is no agreement over a renewal, and it's believed that the 34-year-old is considering moving on for a new challenge having found himself further down the pecking order this year.
Tavernier has fallen behind Dujon Sterling as the first-choice right-back recently, while many of his appearances in this campaign have come as a right-sided centre-back in a back three, with his attacking output not what it once was.
As a result, Rangers are now looking at potential replacements for the summer window, and one highly-rated Liverpool star has emerged as the leading contender to fill that gap.
Rangers Eyeing Luca Stephenson Deal
Rangers manager Danny Rohl looks on
Rangers are considering a move to sign Liverpool starlet Luca Stephenson this summer, and he could be the man to replace Tavernier at right-back.
The 22-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at Dundee United, and he has impressed hugely this season, racking up ten goal contributions while showing his versatility to play in a number of positions.
Described as 'powerful', Stephenson signed a new long-term contract at Anfield last year before moving to Dundee Utd on loan, and it's possible that he would only be allowed to leave on loan rather than permanently.
Rangers are understood to have taken a close look at him in person during the game between the two sides at the weekend, where Rangers claimed a 4-2 win, with Stephenson playing as a wing-back for 72 minutes, where he provided an assist.
