Luis Diaz agrees with Jamie Carragher about leaving Liverpool for Bayern Munich last summer

Since moving to Bayern Munich last summer, Luis Diaz has gone up a level. Both he and Jamie Carragher discussed the move after Tuesday night’s Champions League action.

With 23 goals and 15 assists in all competitions this season, Diaz is showing the world that he is elite. He, Michael Olise and Harry Kane have 140 goal contributions between them.

It’s a move that worked out very well for the German giants, but not so much for the Reds. Liverpool have missed Diaz in the front line. That being said, both he and Carragher think it was the right move — for different reasons.

Form aside, is this a better XI on paper than what we’ll see tonight? 🤔

Liverpool splashed the cash this summer…

Luis Diaz and Jamie Carragher reach the same Liverpool conclusion, but in different ways

After Bayern came away from the Bernabeu 2-1 winners — with Diaz scoring the opener — he spoke on CBS about the decision to let the Colombian leave.

When asked if it was a mistake from Liverpool, he said: “No. They miss him as a player, 100%, there’s no doubt. That was always going to be the case. He was a really good player for Liverpool.

“But sometimes you get presented deals as a club, and at the time that was a good deal for Liverpool.”

Carragher isn’t suggesting that he wasn’t worth keeping, but rather that the context of his Liverpool contract meant selling was the option that made the most sense. Steve Nicol had the same Diaz stance.

In hindsight, you could argue against that, but not many fans were protesting at the time given the fee paid and the players brought in last summer.

As for Diaz, he also thinks it was the right decision, but he’s looking at it from a personal perspective.

He told ESPN after Tuesday’s win: “Deciding to join Bayern was the right choice. I’m really happy and I enjoy every match. I feel great, I’m in good shape, and that means I’m ready to help the team.”

We can look back and lament the sale. It’s perfectly reasonable to do so. But if Liverpool weren’t in such disarray, the narrative would be different.

Would any Liverpool players realistically get into PSG’s starting XI?

Surely we've got no chance against them 😣

Diaz has a great chance of going all the way with Bayern in Europe, and clearly still has a lot to give.

A reunion in the coming weeks isn’t out of the question either. If Bayern and Liverpool win their respective ties, they’ll be meeting in the semi-final to battle for a place at the Champions League final in Budapest. That would be something to see.
