When a mate asked me on Sunday, “Who is Finlay Herrick?” it struck me that plenty of West Ham supporters were probably wondering the same thing. At the time of writing, the young goalkeeper doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page, yet his name is suddenly everywhere. One of the perks of writing for Claret & Hugh is that you end up living and breathing West Ham, constantly learning about the players coming through the system. Herrick is one of those academy products whose progress has been impossible to ignore.
Despite the club boasting a strong crop of young goalkeepers, Herrick has climbed the ranks quickly, establishing himself as one of West Ham’s most exciting prospects. His journey through the academy has been defined by calmness, natural ability, and a genuine bond with the club he joined at just six years old.

West Ham had been preparing this moment
Now 20, he already has an FA Youth Cup and a U18 Premier League South title to his name. And over the weekend, he stepped into the national spotlight during a dramatic FA Cup quarter-final, saving a penalty on his senior debut.
For some, his appearance may have seemed unexpected, but West Ham had been preparing for this moment. Earlier in the season, Herrick was recalled from his loan at Boreham Wood specifically to rejoin the senior setup. The National League side confirmed it themselves. In his ten appearances there, he kept five clean sheets, with the team winning six, drawing three, and losing just once.

Why West Ham are so excited about Herrick
His performances didn’t go unnoticed by England either. Herrick earned a call-up to the England U20 squad in November 2025, adding to previous caps at U16, U17, U18, and U19 level.
Inside West Ham, coaches speak glowingly about his potential. Nuno Espírito Santo described him as “a young goalkeeper with talent… we have a project to help him become what we expect from a good goalkeeper that can help us.”
Mark Noble and the academy staff have also praised his maturity, consistency, and leadership throughout the youth ranks.
His rapid development, international recognition, and the trust placed in him by the club all point to the same conclusion: this is a goalkeeper built for big moments. And after this weekend, the wider football world is finally taking notice.
