Liverpool handed brutal warning ahead of PSG clash as 'massacre' predicted

Paris Saint-Germain beat Liverpool on penalties in last season's Champions League and the Reds have been told this year's meeting won't be as close

Former French international Christophe Dugarry has suggested Liverpool's visit to Paris Saint-Germain could be a "massacre". The 54-year-old, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, believes Arne Slot's team will "arrive terrified" despite running PSG close last season.

The reigning European champions are overwhelming favourites ahead of the quarter-final first leg in Paris. Visitors Liverpool have travelled to the Parc des Princes fresh from a 4-0 FA Cup hammering at the hands of Manchester City and have won just one of their last five matches in all competitions.

Liverpool's latest loss has intensified the pressure on Arne Slot, with the Champions League offering the only hope of silverware this term for last season's Premier League champions. Despite the Reds finishing above PSG in the league phase, their opponents are heavily favoured ahead of the European meeting and Dugarry thinks the tie could be all but over before the return leg at Anfield.

"It's going to be a walk in the park, honestly. Liverpool are disastrous," the former Birmingham and Bordeaux star said on RMC's 'Rothen s'enflamme' show. "Fourteen wins, 10 losses, and 7 draws since the start of the season in the league. They're catastrophic.

"I'm not going to say they have bad players, but they don't play together. In my opinion, the difference in level is colossal. I think PSG will wrap up the quarter-final in the first leg.

"Do you see Liverpool play? They have no legs, they have nothing. Technically, they have good players. They are not clumsy, but they play at two and a half miles an hour.

"When you see the intensity that Paris Saint-Germain manages to put in... it's going to be a massacre.

"Just think, they just conceded four against Manchester City, who we saw against Real Madrid. Momentum is important in the second half of the season," he continued.

"They're scared. Every English team has been thrashed for about a year and a half. Now they're all afraid of Paris Saint-Germain. I guarantee you they'll arrive terrified."

Despite Dugarry all but ruling out the possibility of a Liverpool win, Reds boss Arne Slot has hope. The Premier League side won 1-0 at the Parc des Princes last season, only to lose the return game and bow out on penalties.

Even with Liverpool's domestic decline this season, Slot remains convinced his team is capable of discovering improved form. Speaking to TNT Sports on Saturday, he stressed his team still have a lot to play for as they aim to secure qualification for next season's Champions League.

"In general, we feel we have had a lot of setbacks and disappointments. That is part of being a footballer and being a human being," the Dutch coach said.

"It cannot always go positive, and you need to be there and stand up and that is what it is about now. Players that have shown so much quality in the past, now have a fantastic chance to show that against Paris Saint-Germain again."
