‘For sure’ - Fabrizio Romano drops update on £100m Newcastle United transfer

Sandro Tonali has been linked with a potential Newcastle United exit throughout the 2025-26 campaign.

Manchester United reportedly remain interested in Newcastle United maestro Sandro Tonali.

Speculation surrounding the Italian’s future has dominated the news agenda on Tyneside all season. In November, Tonali stayed coy when asked if he would remain at St James’ Park beyond the current campaign.

This only fuelled the rumour mill that the 25-year-old could follow Alexander Isak and leave the Magpies. His agent, Beppe Rise, has since hinted on several occasions that a Newcastle exit is likely this summer.

Fabrizio Romano gives Sandro Tonali update

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed Man United, Manchester City and Arsenal are in the hunt for Tonali. To compound Newcastle’s misery, he also named former youth sensation Elliot Anderson as another option.

“I keep receiving from you guys many, many questions about the situation of Sandro Tonali, about the situation of Elliot Anderson… Nothing has changed so far,” Romano said. “Sandro Tonali remains the name on Manchester United’s shortlist, depending on the price, the negotiations with Newcastle (and) other clubs.

“Tonali is also appreciated by Man City and Arsenal. But Tonali, for sure, remains a name on Manchester United’s shortlist. Again, there are several factors we will see. Man United also appreciate the player - we know that.

So it’s Man City and Man United on Elliot Anderson, with City already pushing now and then Sandro Tonali, and more names on the shortlist for Manchester United. It could be a very busy summer regarding midfielders.”

Sandro Tonali’s agent plan backfires

Last month, Tonali’s agent told Italian media that his future will be decided after the World Cup. In comments that will infuriate Newcastle fans, he also claimed a move to Man City or Arsenal is very likely.

“That was the aim from the moment he went to England - to try and turn him into a star player,” Riso said. “I think he’s the Italian player with one of the highest values in the world. I don’t know (whether he will join Man City or Arsenal) but it’s very likely.

“Everyone is waiting for the World Cup. Then a thousand scenarios will unfold, but it all kicks off after the World Cup.”

Unfortunately for him, those transfer plans will now need to be revisited after Italy failed to qualify for this summer’s finals. For Newcastle, their exit should be considered a small victory.

Toon chiefs are keen to avoid another Alexander Isak saga that dragged on all summer. With Tonali no longer competing in North America, should he wish to leave, the best course of action would be to sanction a deal early.
