Tottenham are eyeing defensive reinforcements amid the uncertain futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
A major squad overhaul is looming large at Tottenham Hotspur, regardless of how the season ends. Several players could choose to leave the club, forcing Spurs to cash in on key assets before the start of next season.
Even if the Lilywhites remain in the Premier League, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero head through the exit door during the summer transfer window. The club’s first-choice centre-back pairing will want to be playing at the highest level, and Tottenham won’t be competing in Europe next season.
As a result, the Hotspur Way chiefs have started scouring the market for potential defensive reinforcements. Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk has emerged as a target for the Lilywhites ahead of the summer transfer window. Spurs aren’t the only club interested in the centre-back; Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also keeping tabs on the Dutchman’s situation at Elland Road.
Leeds United make decision on Pascal Struijk’s future
Pascal Struijk has been a loyal servant for Leeds United, netting 14 goals in 189 appearances. He has been a mainstay in the starting XI this season under Daniel Farke, making 28 Premier League appearances. However, the Dutch defender is about to enter the final year of his contract, which has put several clubs on red alert.
According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Leeds United are ‘doing everything in their power’ to keep Struijk and are ‘confident’ they will if they stay up. Still, the Yorkshire giants will be ‘susceptible’ to offers from Premier League clubs if they get relegated, with Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle United all keeping tabs on him.
Interest in the former Ajax youngster is likely to intensify if they slump into the bottom three at the end of the campaign. Struijk’s proven top-flight experience, coupled with his versatility and ability, has been one of the reasons behind his major draw from clubs.
Tottenham face competition for Struijk’s signature
Tottenham could do well with the services of Struijk. Valued at £30 million, the Netherlands youth international would be a valuable addition to improve Spurs’ squad depth. However, the Lilywhites could face competition from Villa and Newcastle.
Villa and Newcastle are also interested in signing the central defender as they look to strengthen their squads for next season. Both clubs may have an advantage due to their position in the league table, as well as their financial strength. So, it’d be tricky for Tottenham to convince Struijk to join De Zerbi’s forces.
