Fabrizio Romano delivers update on Sandro Tonali’s Newcastle future

**The speculation around Sandro Tonali’s Newcastle United future isn’t going to go away any time soon. Especially with media darlings from the ‘Big Six’ keen on the Italian.**

Sandro Tonali appears to be attracting interest from Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal, which is a mainstream media journalist’s dream.

The [Magpies have hinted that they may have to sell Tonali](https://www.nufcblog.co.uk/2026/03/31/david-hopkinson-casts-more-doubt-on-sandro-tonalis-future/) to help them fund their big rebuild this summer, but there also seems to be a reluctance to do that with Tonali being a popular figure at the club.

Manchester United is the club being most strongly linked with a move for the Italian as they look to replace Casemiro before next season, and it’s the Red Devils who receive the most attention from Fabrizio Romano in his latest update.

Speaking on his [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1x2D2bdZgk) channel, Romano has spoken about Tonali and the possibility of former Newcastle star Elliot Anderson potentially heading to Man United, City or Arsenal.

> _“I keep receiving from you guys many, many questions about the situation of Sandro Tonali, about the situation of Elliot Anderson… Nothing has changed so far,” Romano said. “Sandro Tonali remains the name on Manchester United’s shortlist, depending on the price, the negotiations with Newcastle (and) other clubs._

>

> _“Tonali is also appreciated by Man City and Arsenal. But Tonali, for sure, remains a name on Manchester United’s shortlist. Again, there are several factors we will see. Man United also appreciate the player – we know that._

>

> _“So it’s Man City and Man United on Elliot Anderson, with City already pushing now and then Sandro Tonali, and more names on the shortlist for Manchester United. It could be a very busy summer regarding midfielders.”_

Romano is leaving plenty of room for doubt there by saying that it will depend on how hard Newcastle negotiates, so there is still a chance that the 25-year-old sticks around for at least another season.

However, David Hopkinson’s words when talking about the financial situation of the club did heavily suggest that a big star _like_ Tonali could be moved on this summer, and he just feels like the easiest one to sell.

The interest is there, and while it would certainly sting to lose a player of his quality, the blowback from the fans won’t be anywhere near as severe as it would if Bruno Guimaraes were sold.

**Rumour Rating**: 8/10 – It’s really starting to feel like Tonali’s time at Newcastle is running out. If the club can pick up a suitable fee, then he’s probably going to go. That being said, Fabrizio Romano will say anything he’s paid to, and Man United likes to pay him to say things, so who knows for sure?
