Everton get the last laugh as financial update emerges from Leicester City (opinion)

Some Everton fans will be able to recall the moment in November 2023 when Leicester held talks to sue the Toffees for the significant sum of £300m.

The Foxes – along with Burnley and Leeds – were left furious when the Premier League deducted ten points from Everton early on in the 2023/24 campaign, feeling the punishment should have taken place in the 2022/23 campaign. Had that happened, it would have likely saved Leicester from relegation at the expense of the Toffees.

Now, however, life has gone from bad to worse for Leicester down at the bottom of the Championship, in a development which might leave some Everton supporters feeling a bit smug after the Foxes tried to sue them – as the Daily Mail claimed at the time.

Leicester lose appeal against six-point deduction as League One looms

Leicester were thrown into a Championship relegation battle back in February after the English Football League (EFL) took six points from the Foxes for financial breaches.

An appeal was lodged, but news has now emerged that this appeal has failed, leaving Leicester staring League One football in the face – they currently sit one point away from safety with five matches remaining, although Portsmouth, who are directly above them, have a game in hand.

It would be a real shock to see Leicester drop down to League One a decade after remarkably winning the Premier League, but considering those at the King Power Stadium tried to drag the Toffees into the mud with them, we presume very few Everton fans will be bothered by their decline.

Relegation for Leicester surely increases Everton’s chances of Abdul Fatawu deal

The Friedkin Group actually have eyes on Leicester, with Everton said to be admirers of Abdul Fatawu – according to the Liverpool Echo. David Moyes is understood to be a huge fan of the Ghana international.

The Telegraph have already claimed a sale is likely regardless of whether Leicester stay up due to their financial problems.

In that respect, we presume the chances of a deal materialising for Everton would only increase if the Foxes do end up falling into League One.
