Liverpool player ratings vs PSG as Reds Champions League hopes left hanging by a thread

Liverpool come away from a trip to PSG with a two-goal deficit to overcome at Anfield — not the worst.

We were all pretty nervy about this Champions League quarter-final, but 2-0 isn’t the worst. If not for some sorry Paris finishing, it could have been four or five.

They were by far the better side. By far. But, we’ll take it and hope to work some magic next week at our home ground.

Here’s how every Liverpool player got on.

Do you still think Liverpool can turn the quarter-final around at Anfield?

2-0 down vs PSG, it's going to be some ask from here…

Liverpool player ratings vs PSG

Giorgi Mamardashvili – 7

Mamardashvili put on his best Alisson Becker impression, keeping PSG at bay with some really good goalkeeping.

Ibrahima Konate – 7

Arne Slot set Liverpool up with a back three for the first time ever, and while there were times when it looked high-risk, I thought his ventures up the pitch out of possession were effective at putting pressure on PSG. Two penalty scares ended up being a quality, goal-saving challenges.

Virgil van Dijk – 5

The Liverpool captain had the bit between his teeth from the outset of this first leg. Van Dijk was widely criticised for comments made after the City loss, and he looked like the hungriest player on the pitch. That being said, he wasn’t as good as his fellow centre-backs.

Joe Gomez – 6

Gomez joined Konate and Van Dijk at the back, and had similar liberties to push into midfield as the Frenchman. He did so very well and stayed solid at the back.

Jeremie Frimpong – 6

Going forward, Frimpong again looked like the biggest threat. There are few counters to pace like that. Came close in the first half and did his job as a defender — apart from a late scare where he gave away the ball in the Liverpool half.

Milos Kerkez – 5

Containing Achraf Hakimi and PSG’s wide players is as tough a challenge as you’ll find in Europe. Kerkez struggled, but any defender would. Second half, he ran himself into the ground before being taken off.

Ryan Gravenberch – 5

Gravenberch was aggressive going forward in the first half, but less so after the break. Even when he did go forward, his dribbling was looser than we’ve come to expect. He needs a statement performance soon.

Alexis Mac Allister – 5

The Argentine almost cost Liverpool on a couple of occasions, getting caught in possession way too often.

Dominik Szoboszlai – 5

Szoboszlai had a good game and a bad game all in one. Good on the defensive end, pressing well and not allowing the PSG stars to relax on the ball. In possession, less so. He was sloppy with his passing in the main.

Florian Wirtz – 4

Wirtz was far too quiet. As usual, there are moments of brilliance, but he was missing for so much of the 90 minutes.

Would any Liverpool players realistically get into PSG’s starting XI?

Surely we've got no chance against them 😣

Hugo Ekitike – 4

Like Wirtz, Ekitike didn’t make himself available in promising positions enough for an attacker of his quality. And that’s another big game in which the Frenchman hasn’t shown up — against his own club too.

Substitutions

None of Liverpool’s substitutions did too much, with PSG dominating the final 15 minutes.
