Liverpool face an uphill battle to keep alive their hopes of silverware this season after they were beaten 2-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday evening.

With the Reds operating an unusual 3-4-1-2 formation, Desire Doue scored a deflected opener on 11 minutes with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netting in the second half.

The result means Arne Slot's side have it all to do when the teams meet in the return at Anfield next Tuesday as they aim for a place in the last four.

The ECHO was in attendance at the Parc des Princes and here we run the rule over the performance of the Liverpool players.

Giorgi Mamardashvili 7

Couldn’t do much about deflected opener and made good saves from Kvaratskhelia and Doue first half. Quieter second half but outfoxed by Kvaratskhelia for second.

Ibrahima Konate 6

Positioning not always on point in new-look rearguard and one miscommunication with Gomez but stuck to task. One strong forward run and rightly had penalty award overturned after good tackle.

Virgil van Dijk 6

At the centre of the back three, pushed out when required and a threat at attacking set-pieces. Required to do a lot of organising.

Joe Gomez 7

Operated in a strange free role for a bit before settling and a danger with his long throws. Booking a joke, however.

Jeremie Frimpong 6

Offered Liverpool an outlet on the right although final ball wasn’t quite there before break. Less of an impact going forward second half. Subbed.

Ryan Gravenberch 6

Attempted to move Liverpool forward with some strong runs but on scene of both goals, unlucky to deflect in opener and didn't track Kvaratskhelia for second.

Alexis Mac Allister 6

Covered lot of ground before half-time and put in some timely interceptions and blocks. Moved ball reasonably well whenever he could. Booked.

Milos Kerkez 6

Playing left wing-back, mixed bag first half with some dogged defending undermined by cheaply giving away possession. More subdued after break. Subbed.

Dominik Szoboszlai 5

Plenty of work but unable to overly influence throughout and seemed a little lost in his role, often flicking on to nobody in particular. Subbed.

Florian Wirtz 7

Saw good possession in patches first half but needed slightly more care with some passes. Looked dangerous when running from deep after break and had one goalbound effort blocked. Subbed.

Hugo Ekitike 5

No faulting effort but guilty far too often of unnecessary fancy flicks and giving the ball away cheaply. Probably tried too hard to impress against former club. Subbed.

SUBS

Andy Robertson (for Kerkez 78)

Forced to defend a few counters.

Cody Gakpo (for Wirtz 78)

Unable to make any impact.

Alexander Isak (for Ekitike 78)

Made similarly negligible contribution.

Curtis Jones (for Szoboszlai 78)

At least had a few touches.

Trey Nyoni (for Frimpong 90+1)

Good experience.
