PSG earned a 2-0 win over Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Luis Enrique declared that Paris Saint-Germain will head to Anfield with victory on their mind after putting Liverpool to the sword in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The reigning European champions delivered a comprehensive 2-0 triumph at the Parc des Princes. Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were on target for PSG but their win should have been more emphatic. The home side were profligate in the final third, while Liverpool failed to record a single chance on target.

Given PSG’s healthy aggregate advantage, they could afford to deploy a game-plan that would try to protect their lead in the return clash at Anfield on Tuesday. However, Enrique knows that would be dangerous and they will be aiming for another victory.

The PSG head coach told Canal+: “It’s a shame, clearly. I think we played a match worthy of our fans. We played very well, we deserved more goals, and I think it’s a shame because we did some very clear things in the second half. But it’s the Champions League, and you have to remember there’s still the second leg, but we’re happy.

“It’s a surprise; it’s the first time they’ve played with five at the back this year. They change a few things, which is normal; opponents adapt to us. We’re used to it, there’s no problem. Whatever the match or the stadium, PSG will try to win, as always. We know it will be difficult at Anfield, which is special.”

PSG defender Achraf Hakimi admitted that the door has been left open for Liverpool to produce a comeback. He said: “Yes, I think we had clear chances to score more goals. We left Liverpool in the game for the second leg, but we're happy with the performance and we have to continue like this for the second leg.

“We have to continue with the same strategy we've used for a long time. We shouldn't think about what Liverpool is doing and we have to make sure we do what we know how to do well in every match.”

Kvaratskhelia, who scored a fine goal to double PSG’s lead in the 65th minute, added: “I think we had chances to score more. We should have scored more goals. But I think it's good, we played a good match, we're going to play at Anfield, in an incredible atmosphere. We're ready and we'll start preparing today for the second leg.”
