Opinion: Kieran Trippier may have already ruled out summer move to Everton

Kieran Trippier’s plans for the future may well suggest a move to Everton may not be on the cards.

Everton are in the market for a new right-back this summer, with David Moyes very keen to strengthen in that position.

There are also questions hanging over the future of Everton players Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson ahead of the summer.

Would this be a good signing on a one-year deal? 🤔

Kieran Trippier question.

However, Trippier may not be the man to replace them as he admitted he’s open to a step down into a lower league.

Kieran Trippier may have quashed potential Everton move

Trippier will leave Newcastle United as a free agent this summer following four years on Tyneside.

Speaking on The Overlap last year, however, the 35-year-old admitted his next move could see him drop down a division.

Do you think Seamus Coleman still has something to offer Everton on the pitch? 🤔

It was a mighty performance vs Czech Republic from him 👏

“I just hope I’m still playing [in five year’s time], whatever level that’s at,” said Trippier

“Yeah, 100% [drop down the leagues]. I’ll just carry on, but honestly, a lot of players say they won’t, and I get it. If they’ve been playing in the Premier League for a long time and then drop down to, say, the Championship or League One, they just can’t be bothered. I’ve spoken to a lot of players who have done it.”

At Newcastle, Trippier has not been playing as the starting right-back when Tino Livramento has been available for Eddie Howe.

Playing regular football may well be on Trippier’s radar and that may well require him to drop down a level.

Although Everton remain on the search for a new right-back, putting their trust in a 35-year-old Trippier to play week in and week out feels unlikely.

Considering Everton are on course to finish above Newcastle, landing an upgrade as the starter on Merseyside would appear a long shot.

However, Trippier could still offer Everton a lot as the second-choice right-back.

Trippier could be Everton’s perfect Seamus Coleman replacement

Coleman could retire at the end of the season and that would leave a real lack of experience in the right-back spot.

That is a role Trippier could fill, whilst also potentially offering more than Coleman has this season on the pitch.

Trippier’s current numbers outshine Leighton Baines’ final years in an Everton shirt.

With Everton pushing for European football, it is possible the Blues are going to need to add a lot of quality to their squad depth over the summer.

And adding Trippier, alongside a younger right-back, could prove an absolute masterstroke by Angus Kinnear.

Whether Trippier would be willing to accept the reduced role is another question.
