Hugo Ekitike’s ego critiqued and Ryan Gravenberch concern vs. PSG

It was yet another night of hapless individual performances for Liverpool in their 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, with Hugo Ekitike lambasted as “ego-driven.”

The Reds were soundly beaten in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, giving them a huge amount of work to do at Anfield next Tuesday.

Here we compare our player ratings with those of the Liverpool Echo, GOAL and the TIA readers.

After receiving criticism for swapping shirts with Rayan Cherki against Man City, the hope was that Ekitike would produce a response in Paris.

Instead, the Frenchman was dreadful, leading the line poorly and getting the worst rating (3.43), thought the Echo were the most generous with a five-out-of-10 rating.

Ekitike was guilty of both failing to hold the ball up and being too flashy on the ball, with GOAL’s Mark Doyle accusing him of constantly “taking the wrong option.”

Meanwhile, This Is Anfield‘s Danny Gallagher was similarly critical, saying he made “ego-driven poor decisions” throughout.

Ryan Gravenberch (3.98) wasn’t much better, switching off for PSG’s second goal and looking out of sorts all night, and, again, the Echo were kind in their assessment with a 6/10 score.

The fact that Giorgi Mamardashvili (6.15) scored highest sums up how ineffective Liverpool were on the pitch.

PSG 2-0 Liverpool: What the stats say

Not a single player got a seven-out-of-10 rating from FotMob, further summing up how poor they were as a collective.

Milos Kerkez (6.7) and Florian Wirtz (6.7) scored highest statistically, not that that’s saying a huge amount.

Wirtz did at least provide some moments of class, completing all three of his dribbles and also winning six out of 11 ground duels – the joint-most of any Liverpool player.

The same cannot be said of Joe Gomez and Dominik Szoboszlai, though, both of whom won only one out of four ground duels.
