Jhon Lucumi has addressed his future as Sunderland continue to monitor the Bologna defender ahead of the summer transfer window
Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi has delivered a fresh update on his future amid continued transfer links with Sunderland ahead of the summer window.
The Colombia international has been repeatedly linked with a move to Wearside over the past year. Sunderland pushed to sign the centre-back last summer but were unable to secure a deal, and subsequently distanced themselves from a move in January as their focus shifted elsewhere in the market. However, Lucumi’s situation continues to be monitored ahead of the upcoming window, particularly with the defender now expected to be available for a fee in the region of £22million.
The 28-year-old has yet to commit to a new contract, with his current deal running until 2027. His representatives have already indicated a desire to explore options elsewhere, and Bologna are understood to be open to a sale this summer to avoid any drop in his market value.
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Lucumi made it clear that no decision has yet been made regarding his next step. “Right now, my focus is solely on finishing the season on a high note and helping the team. Then I’ll sit down with my family, with my wife, and we’ll see with my team what’s best for my career. Now my priority is to give my all for Bologna. And I think that right now, talking about a renewal isn’t the most important thing.”
Lucumi also spoke warmly about his current club when asked about his connection to Bologna. “Everything here is fantastic. I’m truly grateful for the way they welcomed me, the way they treated me, and for the affection they’ve shown me and my family. We’re happy here. We can only express our deepest gratitude for everything Bologna has done for us.”
Despite that, he stopped short of committing his long-term future. “I think it’s right to make a decision based on what’s best for me, for my family, for everyone. I don’t think anyone makes a decision just for the sake of it or simply because they want to leave. I won’t do that either. I’ll decide only after evaluating everything.”
