Leeds United will be aware that they desperately need attacking reinforcements in the summer to further establish themselves as a Premier League outfit.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin ended his barren run in front of goal in United’s last outing against West Ham, but when the Englishman is not firing on all cylinders, Daniel Farke needs someone else he can rely on.

Joel Piroe has certainly proved that he is not capable of being that man, with the forward having another disastrous cameo display after he was subbed on against West Ham.

But after missing out on Jorgen Strand Larsen in January, the Whites could be set to miss out on yet another striker, who they were heavily linked to last summer.

Newcastle join race for Leeds target Gonzalo Garcia

Garcia, 22, found himself frequently linked with a move to Elland Road last summer as Leeds reportedly eyed up a move for the Real Madrid youngster.

However, if United wanted to rekindle that interest in the upcoming summer transfer window, they look set to face increased competition, with Newcastle now among the clubs said to be “monitoring” the Spaniard ahead of a potential move, according to a recent report from Team Talk.

Despite breaking into the first-team squad this season at Madrid, Garcia could still be available this season, but with this interest from Newcastle, a proposed move to West Yorkshire for Garcia has just become more unlikely, as the 49ers could be set to miss out on yet another striker transfer target.

With Garcia managing to grab six goals and two assists in his 32 appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid this season, Leeds will be kicking themselves that they didn’t secure his signature last summer as the youngster continues to grow and develop.

Lukas Nmecha will be nervously looking over his shoulder this summer

Another player who would be significantly impacted should another striker sign for Leeds would be Nmecha, who has found starts hard to come by this season, with the German being viewed as an understudy to Calvert-Lewin by Farke.

Despite having an impressive minutes-to-goals ratio in the Premier League, with Nmecha scoring six league goals this season, with an average of a goal every 149 minutes, some of the 27-year-old’s performances have been subpar when he has started.

The FA Cup clash against West Ham was another reminder that Nmecha’s hold-up play simply isn’t good enough to lead the line by himself, and if a new striker signs for Leeds this summer, he could see his gametime reduced even further.

Out of the 11 duels Nmecha contested against West Ham, he won just four of them

In the 69 minutes he was on the pitch, he lost possession nine times and failed to make the ball stick when Leeds needed him to

If Nmecha does not improve his general hold-up play between now and the end of the season, he could find himself sliding down the pecking order at Elland Road even further.
