James Tarkowski shares what Seamus Coleman still tells him off for at Everton

James Tarkowski has said Seamus Coleman gets frustrated when he says he is only Everton’s vice captain.

Although he rarely plays, Coleman is still regarded as the captain of the club, having been on Merseyside for 17 years

David Moyes’ on-field captain is Tarkowski as he has played almost every game since the Scot returned to the club.

“Seamus is the captain. He knows that, but he actually doesn’t want me saying it,” Tarkowski said on Everton’s YouTube channel.

“Every time I get asked, I always say I’m not the captain; I’m the vice-captain, or second-in-command, or whatever you want to say. But he doesn’t want me saying that.”

There is clear mutual respect between the two players, but Coleman’s captaincy could soon end with his future hanging in the balance.

Coleman could retire from football at the end of the season, with fans on Merseyside and Ireland eagerly awaiting an announcement from the defender.

Having racked up 433 appearances for the Toffees, there are not many better servants for the club than the 37-year-old right-back.

“He leans on us for opinions, and the manager does here and there, but we all know who the leader of the group is in terms of the players, because Seamus is such a good leader,” Tarkowski added.
