Why Liverpool are concerned about signing Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace this summer

Liverpool are one of many top clubs in Europe looking at Adam Wharton as a potential midfield addition, but there are doubts around the fit.

It has been made abundantly clear this season that Liverpool need strengthening in the midfield, and the Crystal Palace star has been identified as a top target.

Liverpool’s interest in Wharton has seemingly fluctuated in recent months, and it might be for the reason outlined in a wide-reaching transfer report by the Daily Mail. The hesitance centres around his profile, and how it would slot into the midfield unit at Anfield.

Do you still think Liverpool can turn the quarter-final around at Anfield?

Liverpool have doubts about Adam Wharton’s physical profile

Wharton has been described as a Spanish-style midfielder — silky smooth, technically perfect, and an elite distributor.

It’s why clubs like Real Madrid, Man United and Chelsea are pursuing a summer move. Liverpool, too, have been in the mix for Wharton, but the report claims they are yet to be fully convinced.

The reason being that there are ‘question marks’ around the 22-year-old and ‘whether he has the legs’ to operate in a Liverpool midfield already short on physicality.

There’s no denying the quality Wharton possesses, nor the potential he has to become an elite holding midfielder in the Premier League. Still, Liverpool may want to direct their efforts towards a signing that will bring the midfield back to the heights they reached last season.

The more physical midfielders Liverpool can pursue

If they decide to park the Wharton interest, there are plenty of more imposing options who could be gettable in the summer.

Liverpool love Eduardo Camavinga, who could leave Real Madrid at the end of the season. That’s the dream target in my view.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

Other players in that mould include Sunderland’s Noah Sadiki, Ardon Jashari from AC Milan, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.

The need for a six is not up for debate, but it will be interesting to see what the Reds prioritise in their search. Wharton is an unbelievable talent, but oftentimes, fit matters just as much.
