The 32-year-old Scotland left-back becomes the second star set for an exit following an announcement from Mo Salah last month.
A native of Glasgow, Robertson joined the Reds in a £8 move from Hull City in 2017.
“I just think it’s better being out in the open, that now I can fully focus on the team from now until the end of the season,” Robertson told the team website about making the announcement now. “I think it’s important that I do that, I’ve always done that. But the time to have the emotional farewell and tell the fans and the people connected to this club what they mean to me, that will come closer to the end. I don’t think I’m quite ready for that yet. It’s just to try to get it out there so I can now be open and honest with everyone.”
Robertson has made 270 league appearances for Liverpool, scoring 10 goals. The Celtic youth product has won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, an FA Cup and the 2019 Champions League title with the club.
“I know teams move on and I think now is the time for me to move on and go wherever my next move is and wherever my career takes me,” Robertson said. “I’ll always look back on amazing memories at this football club, I’ve put my heart and soul into the club for nine years and I’ve not got many regrets. I’ve grown as a man and as a person. This club will always mean the world to me, the fans will mean the world to me. It has been a hell of a journey.”
Internationally, Robertson made his Scotland debut in 2014 and has been capped 92 times. Named the captain of the Tartan Army in 2018, Robertson is set to lead Scotland into its first World Cup since 1998 this summer in North America. Scotland will play in Group C alongside Brazil, Morocco and Haiti.
Liverpool currently sits fifth in the Premier League on 49 points, occupying the final Champions League place. The Reds return to action with a visit from Fulham on Saturday before the return leg of the Champions League quarter-finals tie with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, facing a 2-0 deficit from Wednesday’s first leg in the French capital.
