Scotland captain Andy Robertson has already left the door open for a switch to Celtic - if he can give his "best years" to the club.

But as the 32-year-old nears the end of his Liverpool contract after confirming his departure, he may be set to miss out on his personal threshold he set for a switch to Glasgow's East End.

The Anfield vice-skipper Robertson has enjoyed a glittering nine years with the Reds where he has lifted every major honour possible - including two Premier League titles.

The Champions League-winning left-back almost joined English rivals Tottenham Hotspur in January - before Arne Slot blocked the move - after falling behind £40million signing Milos Kerkez in the pecking order.

Murmurs over a blockbuster move to Celtic have lingered since the end of the winter window, and back in 2022 the left-back conceded he didn't want to be an "old guy" pulling on the Hoops.

He set his own deadline at 34 years old - which is now just two years away for Robertson.

Discussing a move to club where he started his career, he said "Every time I watch Celtic, I consider it.

“When you watch them and see a packed Celtic Park... as a fan you always have that dream. Ideally I want to finish my career here at Liverpool. If I can stay at the top of my game, at the top of the tree my whole career, that’s the route I want to go down.

“But also, when I look at Celtic and when I was growing up, I was thinking I wanted to give them my best years. When I was at Queen’s Park I had a dream of still playing with Celtic and always dreamed of giving my best years to Celtic.

“And now I don’t want to go as a 34 or 35-year-old old guy that my uncles start hating on me because I can’t move any more! Time will tell. I’m very much a person who lives in the moment.

“I don’t look too far ahead and I don’t often look back. There will be a time for that.”

Speaking last month while on international duty, Robertson kept his cards close to his chest when asked about a switch to Glasgow's East End: "It’s not really one to talk about.

“Obviously I was at Celtic as a kid and had a season ticket, that’s not a secret. But it’s not something I really want to get into.

“The options that are on the table for me at the minute will stay private and that’s the way I’ve always done it.

“People can talk and there’s been a lot of talk around it, where I’m going to go next.

“I’ve seen it but I stay away from it all now. Me and my wife have had a good laugh about some of it.
