Leeds United’s week of injury blows has gone from bad to worse with the news that loanee Mateo Joseph has suffered a significant issue.
A statement from Joseph’s loan club Real Mallorca has confirmed that the younger has suffered a knee problem and the YEP understands he has damaged his anterior cruciate ligament. Neither club is able to confirm yet what the next step will be for Joseph or how long he will be out of action.
Real Mallorca posted on their social media: “Mateo Joseph has suffered an injury to his left knee during yesterday's training session. Following the completion of the relevant medical tests, Leeds United and RCD Mallorca are awaiting a joint decision on the next steps to be taken.”
The 22-year-old striker has got his wish this season after asking to leave Elland Road to move back to Spain, though Leeds were not minded to sell and opted only to loan him out. Joseph has had plenty of game time, starting 19 La Liga matches although end product has been hard to come by. To date Joseph has a pair of league goals and four assists, the latest of which was to set up the winner in a famous victory over Real Madrid.
Mallorca currently sit two points above the drop zone after 30 games of the La Liga season, while Leeds are four points ahead of West Ham in 18th in the Premier League. This week the Whites have had more than their fair share of bad news on the injury front, losing Dan James, Joe Rodon and Anton Stach for Monday’s game against Manchester United. Daniel Farke believes it is not realistic to expect either Rodon or Stach to return this month from their respective ankle injuries. Jaka Bijol, Gabi Gudmundsson and Noah Okafor are also all doubts for the trip to Old Trafford.
