“I feel complete support”: Arne Slot insists Liverpool owners FSG still back him

Arne Slot insists Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are still giving him their “complete support” despite ongoing calls for the head coach to be sacked.

The pressure on Slot’s job has intensified over the past week after big defeats to Man City and Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Champions League.

But despite Liverpool facing the risk of missing out on all of their objectives for his second season in charge, the message is that the Dutchman’s position is still safe.

Slot was questioned on whether he still feels the backing of FSG as well as figureheads Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards during his pre-Fulham press conference.

“I’m repeating myself a lot, but I’ve said it many times: I feel a lot of support,” he told reporters at the AXA Training Centre.

“But not only from the owners, Richard and Michael, but I feel a lot of support from them as well.

“As weird as it might sound, I also feel the support of the fans.

“In Paris, when the players went out for the warmup, the fans – after a 4-0 loss – immediately started signing ‘we love you Liverpool’.

“After we were, I think it’s fair to say, outplayed over 90 minutes we went to the away end and they were still singing for us and clapping for us.

“So that’s the support I’ve felt, we’ve felt, constantly.

“I think, and I’ve said this many times as well, the club knows in which period of time we are in.

“In the meantime I feel complete support, yes.”

Arne Slot’s future: Mixed reports on Liverpool’s decision

There are conflicting reports around Slot’s future this week, with the Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace sharing the stance that FSG want to back him for next season and BILD‘s Axel Hesse reiterating their interest in Xabi Alonso.

Hesse’s report is particularly interesting given his credible ties to Alonso from during his time in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, while it has been claimed that the Spaniard’s agent, Inaki Ibanez, was present for Wednesday’s loss to PSG.

But as it stands the communication from more local sources, including those on Merseyside, remains that Slot’s job is safe as Liverpool vie for a top-five finish in the Premier League.

It has however been suggested that FSG’s support could be tested if the Reds fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League, which remains a possibility at this stage.
