Xabi Alonso’s representative was in attendance for Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, according to reports.

Football Fancast claim that Inaki Ibanez “took a private jet” to be at the Parc des Princes.

There is no additional detail as to why Ibanez made the trip or whether he even met with any Liverpool officials.

However, it does raise more questions about the future of current head coach Arne Slot.

The PSG performance was unacceptable

Slot admitted after the game that his side were lucky not to concede more than two goals against PSG.

What is more damning, though, is that the Dutchman clearly set his team up simply to reduce the chances of being hammered. He has never played five at the back from the start in a game since he was appointed by the Merseyside club.

Slot promised in the build-up to the match that his team would go toe to toe with Luis Enrique’s team, but that simply did not happen. The tactics deployed were focused on damage limitation.

Liverpool will have to make a big decision on Slot

Football Fancast report that the 47-year-old’s future hinges on the Reds qualifying for the Champions League, but it is very unlikely to be the only criterion that the club will consider when assessing the manager’s performance.

The team has been hard to watch this campaign, and while some had hoped that Slot could fix the issues as the season went on, things have been getting worse instead of better.

FSG won’t sack the head coach on a whim. They will want to ensure that a replacement has the ability to take this club forward. Most feel Alonso is the right man, but we shall see if the club agrees.
