Arne Slot hints at rotation vs. Fulham with ‘worries again’ over 2 players

Arne Slot has admitted worries over Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez after both started Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to PSG, with rotation set for Liverpool vs. Fulham.

Liverpool host Fulham in the Premier League just three days before the visit of Paris Saint-Germain for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

While the focus is on Saturday’s clash there will be plans in place to manage the squad ahead of an all-important tie on Tuesday night.

“Yesterday was a recovery day. Let’s see where a few of our players are,” Slot told reporters in his pre-Fulham press conference.

“I’m not telling you for the first time that not all of our players are able and capable of playing three days later another intense game.

“Let’s see what the lineup brings this time.”

Slot was able to welcome Alexander Isak back for the first time this year against PSG, while Mohamed Salah remained an unused substitute along with Federico Chiesa and Rio Ngumoha.

Andy Robertson, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo came on with Isak, with Liverpool’s head coach of the belief that it was his “best bench” of the season.

But looking ahead to the visit of Fulham, Slot admitted concerns over Frimpong and Gomez, who both playing 90 minutes in Paris.

“It’s right that compared to the whole season this is the best period of time when it comes to players available,” he continued.

“But if I go away from here and into my office and look at my list I’m seeing three defenders injured: a right-back, Conor Bradley; a centre-back, Giovanni Leoni; and a player who can play at centre-back, Wataru Endo.

“Two of the players I’m of course worried about again for tomorrow will be Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez.

“So yes, it’s the best it has been this season. I think when you look at our bench against Paris Saint-Germain, it’s the best bench we’ve had throughout the whole season.

“But sometimes things might not be as good as they look, if you understand what I’ve just tried to explain.”

Alisson injury update: Slot “really positive” on return

Slot could look to shift Dominik Szoboszlai to right-back on Saturday to allow Gomez and Frimpong rest, while Robertson, Jones, Gakpo, Salah and Ngumoha are likely to come in for starts.

Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to keep his place in goal, with Alisson yet to make his recovery from a hamstring setback.

“We don’t get a player back yet, but Alisson is working hard to find his way back into the squad,” Slot explained.

“So that’s really positive, but he will not be in the squad this weekend yet.”
