Transfer race ramps up for Celtic target as Liverpool legend bids emotional Anfield farewell…

Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid have also expressed an interest in the Scotsman

Andy Robertson has confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season upon the expiration of his contract after nearly a decade at the club.

The boyhood Celtic fan made his move to Anfield from Hull in 2017, having previously been at Queen’s Park and Dundee United. Since then, he’s won every major honour possible south of the border, including a Champions League and two Premier League trophies. The fullback also earned his title as Scotland National Team captain whilst at Merseyside and has helped them reach three major tournaments.

Following Liverpool’s £40 million signing of Bournemouth left back, Milos Kerkez in the summer, Robertson hasn’t featured as much as he’d like for the Reds this season under Arne Slot, making just 15 starts thus far. With both club and player agreeing now is the right time to move on, at the age of 32, Robertson’s playing career is far from over just yet, with several potential suitors.

Robertson has made no secret of his admiration for Celtic, where he spent time as a teenager before moving to Queen’s Park. Due to the injury records of Kieran Tierney and Marcelo Saracchi, the Hoops could benefit from some more options at left back, but whether they’d be able to compete financially with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid is another matter. Serie A giants Napoli and Juventus have also expressed an interested.

Robertson bids emotional Liverpool farewell

In a video announcing his decision, he said: "I think now's the time for me to move on. The nine years I'll look back on with a big smile on my face. This club means everything to me, the fans mean everything to me, the people connected to the club mean everything to me. I think I owe it to them still to, until my very last day, I'll give everything to this football club, which I've done over the last nine years and I'm very proud of that.

“The time to have the emotional farewell and tell the fans and the people connected to this club what they mean to me, that will come closer to the end. I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet. From minute one I came into this football club, I wanted to be successful. I wanted to try to bring trophies back to this football club, try to help put us back onto a place where I believe this football club belongs. I'm very proud that I've been a part of fantastic teams that have been able to do that."

On April 9, the club confirmed his departure via X, with a photo of the Scotland captain captioned: “We can confirm Andy Robertson will bring his Reds career to an end at the conclusion of the current season. He will do so as a Liverpool legend”

Robertson on potential Hoops switch

The fullback, who claimed his inspirations growing up were Henrik Larsson and Shunsuke Nakamura, recently told The Sun that returning to Glasgow would always be an on the table. He said: “It’s not really one to talk about. I was at Celtic as a kid and had a season ticket. That’s not a secret. But it’s not something I really want to get into.

“The options on the table for me at the minute will stay private. That’s the way I’ve always done it. People can talk and there’s been a lot of talk around where I’m going next. I’ve seen it, but I stay away from it all now. That’s part and parcel of it. Me and my wife have had a good laugh about some of it. Let’s see what happens, what the next destination is and take it from there.”
