Premier League club ahead of Celtic in race for Andy Robertson, but there's a catch - Report

If Celtic are to sign Andy Robertson, they’ll have to punch well above their financial weight to do so.

On Thursday, Liverpool confirmed that the Scotland captain would be leaving Anfield at the end of the season, calling an end to nine years at the club.

It’s public knowledge that Robertson is a born-and-bred Celtic supporter, leading to inevitable rumours that he may opt for a move to his boyhood heroes upon departing Merseyside.

But one thing is clear: that won’t be his only option.

Andy Robertson: Tottenham ahead of Celtic in the race

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Tottenham are in ‘pole position’ to sign Robertson on a free transfer this summer.

Additionally, according to leading Liverpool journo Paul Joyce of The Times, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Napoli are also alerted to his availability.

There is a catch to Spurs’ interest, though, given that their status in English top-flight remains at risk. In the event of relegation, Ornstein reports that the situation would change.

He came close to moving to North London in January, revealing that he rejected the move in favour of helping Liverpool until the end of the season.

Atletico Madrid tried to sign him last summer; Diego Simeone has been known to use the Premier League market in recent years.

The appeal of Napoli will be obvious to any Scottish player. Scott McTominay’s career has transformed since he joined in 2024, and Billy Gilmour also plays his football in Naples.

Robertson isn’t the only Liverpool player of interest to Juventus. They reportedly hold intense interest in Alisson Becker, whilst Federico Chiesa is being tipped for a return to Turin.

These reports undoubtedly cast doubt over a move to Glasgow for Robertson, but they don’t rule it out. Kieran Tierney was in a similar situation last summer, ultimately following his heart over the money.

Robertson was released by Celtic as a 15-year-old, building his career from the ground up with Queen’s Park.

Whether or not the Hoops would be willing to accommodate the wages of both him and Tierney, despite both being left-backs, remains to be seen.

The Scotland National Team have wrestled with the left-back dilemma for the best part of a decade now, using both in a back five in their most recent international friendly.

The 2026 transfer window is still months away, but what is the number one position Celtic need to improve this summer?📝

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has teased Celtic move for Andy Robertson

His close friend Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has already teased a possible Parkhead move for the left-back.

He said on the Celtic FC Podcast: “When I was linked, he was the first one who called me and said, ‘get yourself up there now’.

“But I’m obviously really close with Robbo and his missus and his kids, and my missus is really close with them also, so we get on really well with them.

“Having him as a reference point was perfect for me. He’s told me where I need to live, Where I need to go, where the rest [do]…

“He’s told me everything. He’s a proper Glasgow boy… I just said to him, ‘It’s a shame you’re not here with me…’

“Maybe came a bit early… he might join me soon. He’s a bit younger than me, Robbo. I’d hope to see him here one day. I think he’d be amazing here.”
