Arne Slot future latest: Conflicting reports on Liverpool’s plans to sack

Arne Slot faces more pressure on his position as Liverpool head coach, with conflicting reports over whether Fenway Sports Group intend to sack him.

After damaging losses to Man City and Paris Saint-Germain, the scrutiny over Slot’s job has only further intensified.

The Dutchman is subject of increasing calls for the sack while former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is considered his ideal successor.

Based on the data following Liverpool’s recent 4-0 defeat to Manchester City and the 2-0 first-leg loss to PSG, here is the updated win percentage box for Arne Slot.

ARNE SLOT: LIVERPOOL WIN RATE BY SEASON

2024/25 2025/26 Overall

68% 51% 60%

Arne Slot‘s win rate (60 percent from 105 games) has recently dropped below Jurgen Klopp‘s record (62 percent from 491 games).

But reports in England insists that FSG are planning to stick with Slot – with plans to support their head coach going into next season.

Sam Wallace: FSG planning for next season with Slot

According to the Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace: “The expectation that Slot will be dismissed at the end of the season – or even earlier – is at odds with the mood from FSG in Boston and the British-based executives Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes.”

Wallace adds that “the consensus is that Slot deserves to start next season,” and “while [he] is acknowledged to have made errors, the feeling is that he deserves four transfer windows before a judgment is made.”

That does of course overlook the fact that four transfer windows have already passed since Slot was appointed including a record-breaking £446.2 million spend last summer.

“Slot has a contract until the end of next season, and the club are of a mind to persevere into the last season of that deal before making any decision on a renewal or otherwise,” Wallace writes.

Axel Hesse: Slot sack expected; Alonso “top candidate”

However, BILD‘s Axel Hesse, a source considered close to Alonso from his time in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, has given a different view of the situation.

Hesse claims that “a change of manager is expected” and that is “one of the reasons” why Liverpool are yet to make a firm move to replace Mohamed Salah.

This comes as Alonso is their “top candidate” to take over, with the Spaniard “ready to move if the Reds make him a concrete offer.”

The suggestion is that Hesse’s information comes from Alonso’s camp and that could either provide a clearer view of Liverpool’s plans – not clouded by their own briefings to the media – or that the 44-year-old is in fact advertising himself as available.

Regardless of their genuine stance on Slot’s future, Liverpool would be minded to play down any reports over a sacking while the season is ongoing.

The Reds remain able to secure Champions League football via a top-five finish in the Premier League and will look to overturn a 2-0 defeat to PSG in the second leg of their quarter-final next week.

With their objectives still technically in reach, Liverpool are unlikely to indicate any desire to part ways with Slot.
