The defender has a special release clause in his Tottenham contract.
Cristian Romero is one of the most established players in the Tottenham Hotspur squad and was linked with a move away last summer before signing a contract extension in north London.
The central defender openly flirted with a move to La Liga, and Atletico Madrid were keen to add him to their roster. Diego Simeone felt a player like Cristian Romero would fit his system like a glove and pushed for his signature, but after the Lilywhites won the Europa League with the Argentine defender delivering a Man of the Match display against Manchester United in the final, the club were able to convince him to stay.
While the €50m Romero has stayed, he has endured a mixed campaign in N17. After starting the season strongly, the 27-year-old has lost his form. He has been sent off twice, costing his team points, while the defender has been embroiled in controversy off the pitch. Amidst all these, Victor Romero, Cristian’s father, has seemingly revealed the existence of a special release clause in the centre-back’s Tottenham contract.
Real Madrid president tipped to sign Cristian Romero
Real Madrid have not been at their best this season and decided to make a managerial change earlier this season. By sacking Xabi Alonso, they appointed Alvaro Arbeloa to stabilise the situation. Yet, things haven’t been great under Arbeloa, with Real Madrid losing the 2026 Supercopa de España to Barcelona and second-tier Spanish side Albacete knocking them out of the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.
Los Blancos have been all over the place defensively. With Eder Militao having become injury-prone in the last two years and Antonio Rudiger out of contract at the end of the season, there is a notion that the Spanish giants will sign at least a central defender in the summer.
Now, 1986 World Cup winner Oscar Ruggeri has urged Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to sign Romero to address their defensive problems.
“If I were Florentino Perez, I would go for Cristian Romero, without a doubt. He’s a fantastic player, a serious player for the position, who formed a great partnership with [Nicolás] Otamendi [for the National Team],” Ruggeri said in an interview with Bolavip.
Romero expected to leave Spurs
With Spurs possibly playing in the Championship next term, it feels like Romero’s chapter in N17 will be coming to an end in the summer. Even if Roberto De Zerbi guides the club to safety, no participation in Europe next season is set to play a big role in his potential decision to leave the club.
The 2022 World Cup winner did not give a clear answer when he was quizzed on his future before the March international break. Romero has vowed to put “200 per cent” into Tottenham’s “last seven finals”, starting from Sunday’s trip to Sunderland, to preserve their top-flight status.
Hopefully, the South American star hits top form quickly and plays a big role in keeping our club safe. Post that, Romero can decide the next chapter of his career, with his father already spilling the beans over an alleged special release clause.
