Aston Villa loanee dubbed 'explosive player' by coach despite lack of game time

Reading FC signed the 20-year-old on loan from Villa until the end of the season on January deadline-day, after he impressed under Unai Emery in the Europa League in their 3-2 victory over Red Bull Salzburg.

So far this season, Kadan has only made six appearances for Reading (two starts and a total of 205 minutes played) where he has impressed fans and won a penalty that sealed a 1-1 draw against Port Vale in February.

Young came on as a substitute in the Royals 2-1 loss to Lincoln City on Easter Monday, which saw the Imps promoted to the Championship for the first time in 65 years, but only in the last eight minutes of the game.

When asked about his selection decisions after the game, Richardson explained his rationale for playing Paddy Lane ahead of Kadan Young: "I think just the amount of experience Paddy's got at the club, the amount of games played for the club. Obviously, Kadan Young's probably an out-and-out wide player, so to speak, but we needed somebody with a bit more experience to go inside the pitch. It's obviously a different role.

"If it had been out wide, I think Kadan gets the nod but as a ten inside the pitch, I think you've got to be careful that you're not putting people in them places. We aren't blessed with a lot of changes at the minute, are we? We're down to our bare bones. We can debate whatever we want. I think in hindsight, all the best ideas are the ones at six o'clock because we didn't get the results on," said Richardson.

When James Beattie was asked about Young and his development at Reading, he told The Reading Chronicle: “Kadan got into the England under-20s and went away with them, he's an explosive player.

“He's someone that can come on and probably change a game with his pace, but again, a young player who's developing and we're sort of helping with that development.

"Another nice young man representing his mother club well and he hasn't been a problem at all.”
