Coventry v Sheffield Wednesday: Pedersen on why Sky Blues are so hard to beat

Sheffield Wednesday have some pressing matters to deal with at Coventry City on Saturday lunchtime.

Only the Championship’s biggest shock of the season can stop the bottom-of-the-table Owls extending their winless run to a record 37 games. A home win would mean only a goal difference miracle can stop Coventry’s promotion to the Premier League.

But just stopping Frank Lampard's side over 90 minutes is a challenge. They have 15 more Championship goals than anyone.

Shut out by Hull City on Monday, they have not failed to score in consecutive games since October 2023.

"We have to defend the best ever in the season to compete," said Owls manager Henrik Pedersen, whose side have conceded 82 to the 84 scored by Coventry.

"Then you also have to be strong when you win the ball.

"We need more times where we keep the ball higher up the pitch so we will breathe sometimes. We have to have phases on the ball where we can rest a little bit."

Even in this nightmare season, Coventry are the only team to score five past Wednesday, in October's 5-0 win at Hillsborough.

"How they pressed, how they played their offensive transition with individual quality and speed was on a high level,” reflected Pedersen. "How they build up with big flexibility, they are the most difficult team to press in the league.

"There is no other team where you need so many players together before you have a good chance to press them and you need to press them because if you stay too deep this is the team that makes most goals when opponents are in a deep defending position.

"But beside the tactical side we need a big intensity because they can move the ball quickly and have top individual skills."

Pedersen picks from the same squad as on Monday, with Joe Ndala missing through injury amidst reports he has been disciplined for poor time-keeping lately.

"He is still out with his hamstring. We hope he will train Monday again," said Pedersen of the Hull loanee.

"We have spoken internally about what's happened. We have to make him fit again, then we take it from here."
