Revealed: The'final nail in the coffin for Slot'as FSG prepare for major sack decision

Failure to secure Champions League football this season could prove decisive for Arne Slot’s future at Liverpool, according to a fresh report from Football Insider.

The claim suggests that missing out on Europe’s elite competition may ultimately be viewed as the tipping point in determining whether the Dutchman remains in charge beyond the current campaign.

According to Football Insider’s Peter O’Rourke, Liverpool’s hierarchy sees qualification for the Champions League as a minimum expectation following significant recent investment in the squad.

He indicates that failure to finish in the top four would represent a major setback both financially and competitively.

Missing out on Champions League football could be viewed internally as the “final nail in the coffin” for Slot, particularly given the scale of backing he has received in the transfer market. Liverpool spent £460m in the summer transfer window, but have lost 17 games in all competitions to yield a dismal return on investment.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, O’Rourke explained: “Look, it’s getting harder and harder for Arne Slot to remain as Liverpool manager.

“The focus is on trying to qualify for the Champions League and at least getting fifth place but that’s going to be a difficult task too. They’ve got a tough run in, Liverpool.

“It’s constant scrutiny on Slot right now as well, and as you said, it looks like they’re going to end up with no silverware this season.

“If they miss out qualifying for next season’s Champions League through their league finish, then that could be the final nail in the coffin for Slot.”

Liverpool’s recent league struggles have left their qualification hopes under pressure, increasing scrutiny on the Dutchman during a critical stage of the season.

Pressure mounting on Slot amid worrying regression in recent weeks

The pressure surrounding Slot has intensified during a difficult campaign marked by inconsistent performances and disappointing results. Liverpool’s form has fluctuated significantly compared to last season, when Slot led the club to the Premier League title in his first year in charge.

Liverpool have lost three consecutive matches in all competitions for the third time this season. It's the first time they've had 3+ runs of 3+ consecutive defeats in a campaign since 1953-54, when they were relegated from the top-flight.

Despite that achievement, expectations remain high at Anfield, particularly after heavy spending and squad reshaping designed to maintain the club’s position among Europe’s elite.

Failure to return to the Champions League would not only impact finances but also Liverpool’s ability to attract top-level players in future transfer windows, another factor reportedly weighing heavily in internal discussions.

FSG face a major decision over Slot’s future, with the bulk of recent reporting indicating that an end-of-season review set to determine whether or he will be fired in the summer.

Xabi Alonso has been heavily linked with replacing Slot in the dugout next season.
