Brentford boss Andrews cools European talk

Updated / Friday, 10 Apr 2026 17:58

Keith Andrews wants Brentford to create something "really special" but warned too much talk of European qualification could be detrimental to actually achieving it.

Saturday's meeting with Everton at the GTech Community stadium could prove pivotal to those hopes, with Brentford currently sitting in the Conference League play-off spot, level on 46 points and with just a two-goal advantage over their opponents.

Andrews was a surprise appointment after Thomas Frank left the role for Tottenham Hotspur last summer, but an excellent maiden season in charge saw the Dubliner rewarded with [a six-year contract in February](https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2026/0226/1560639-andrews-rewarded-with-six-year-contract-at-brentford/).

Toffees boss David Moyes has more freely entertained the prospect of European qualification, something former Republic of Ireland international Andrews chalked up to experience in the manager’s chair.

"He’s been around the block a bit more than I have so he’s probably a little more used to these questions," said Andrews.

"For him, it’s obviously speaking about his club and his players. When it comes to us and what our ambition is, it’s to achieve as much as we can.

"That’s the reality. We go into every game trying to win. Obviously it doesn’t always materialise but we want to be ambitious.

"We want to strive to create something really, really special, but if you lose sight of the next game and you start thinking of what the table will look like come the 24th of May, you can go slightly in the wrong direction, I think."

Andrews revealed Aaron Hickey (hamstring) and Vitaly Janelt (metatarsal) were both making progress, but Saturday comes too soon for both.
