Big from FSG: Liverpool now leading the race to sign "outstanding" £45m midfielder

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has some “interest” in completing a move to Liverpool at the end of the season, according to a new report.

It’s fair to say that the Reds’ midfield has come under fire this season, with too many individuals a shadow of the figures they were last term, playing a big part in the team’s woes.

Ryan Gravenberch has looked all at sea sitting in front of the defence, having been world-class in 2025/26, throwing doubt over his long-term future in that role.

Meanwhile, Alexis Mac Allister’s legs appear to have gone at the age of just 27 – they will hopefully come back after a rest – with the Argentine struggling match to match his opponents’ physicality.

Curtis Jones hasn’t kicked on at all, while even Dominik Szoboszlai’s performances have tailed off as the campaign has gone on, despite him being Liverpool’s best player overall.

A new midfielder is a must in the summer transfer window, and according to RTI Esporte to [via Sport Witness], the Reds are leading the race to sign £45m-rated Gomes, and he has “expressed interest” in moving to Anfield.

Rivals Manchester United are also in the mix to snap him up, with Wolves’ imminent relegation meaning he is all but certain to depart.

Is Joao Gomes a perfect summer signing for Liverpool?

There is so much to admire about Gomes as a footballer, with the 25-year-old proving himself as an excellent Premier League player, so often shining even when Wolves are struggling.

This season, the Brazilian has averaged an impressive 2.9 tackles per game in the league, highlighting his tenacity, and former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has praised him alongside Manuel Lemina in the past, saying:

“The defensive work in central midfield is something that goes unnoticed sometimes, but you can’t win matches in the Premier League unless your midfielders do the hard yards and the dirty bits and they did it brilliantly. The pair of them, outstanding.”

Gomes ticks so many boxes for Liverpool, from his age to the quality he would provide in a deep-lying role, and his price tag is also far from extortionate.

The Reds must view him as one of the best options to bring in once the summer arrives, and it is easy to see him making a big difference.
