Fabrizio Romano: "Negotiations are moving to the final stages" with deal almost done

Liverpool are reportedly closing in on securing Ibrahima Konaté’s long-term future, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming that a new deal is now in its final stages.

The update follows a report from David Lynch, who reported that the Reds are edging ever closer to sealing what could prove to be one of their most significant pieces of business ahead of the summer window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, negotiations between Liverpool and Konaté are progressing strongly, with an agreement now described as being “almost there.”

Romano explained that talks have moved into their final phase, with the defender’s salary largely agreed and only minor contractual details still to be resolved.

He reports via YouTube: “These negotiations are moving to the final stages. So the agreement between Konate and Liverpool is getting closer, it’s almost there.

“It’s not done, signed and completed yet, and we have to wait until the very end before saying it’s done, because with free agents and really important players like Konate, everything can happen in five minutes.”

“But in this case, Konate and Liverpool are advancing very well in conversations to get new contract sorted and done.

“The salary is almost agreed, the length of contract is being discussed. There are some clauses to clarify, but Konate and Liverpool are almost there.”

While the deal is not yet formally signed, the expectation is that the outcome is becoming increasingly clear, with Liverpool confident of keeping the French international at Anfield.

Real Madrid withdrawal proved pivotal turning point for Liverpool and Konate

A key moment in the negotiations reportedly came when Real Madrid stepped back from their interest in Konaté.

TEAMtalk reports that Liverpool accelerated talks after learning the Spanish giants had cooled their pursuit, removing what had been seen as the most serious threat to retaining the defender.

With that pressure eased, Liverpool moved quickly to table their most lucrative offer yet, ultimately paving the way for the current breakthrough in discussions.

That shift in momentum appears to have been decisive in pushing talks toward completion.

Securing Konaté’s long-term future would represent a major victory for Liverpool, particularly given the importance of defensive stability heading into the next phase of recruitment.

Liverpool spent £460m on transfers last summer, and have already committed £60m to the signing of Rennes star Jeremy Jacquet.

It’s vital that the club gets back on track after the regression of the 2025-26 season, and keeping Konate is a strong first step.
