Leeds United star’s days are numbered despite stunning FA Cup performance

Leeds United are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, and could set our sights on Manchester City’s James Trafford as the solution.

United’s hopes of staying in the Premier League this season are going to have a massive bearing on what business follows in the summer window.

However, the club will have plans starting to fall into place in the event we avoid the drop. That looks to include a goalkeeper.

Leeds United monitoring James Trafford’s Manchester City situation ahead of summer transfer

A report from FourFourTwo this week has revealed that Leeds are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.

As a result, it’s claimed the 49ers are considering a move to sign Manchester City’s second-choice stopper James Trafford. The Etihad ‘keeper only joined in the summer, but was quickly pushed aside as first choice by the arrival of Gigi Donnarumma.

Trafford has voiced his frustrations over essentially having to play solely in the cups this season. In turn, it’s a transfer I’ve previously suggested the club keep on eye on. Trafford will no doubt be receptive to approaches that make assurances that he’ll start weekly in the top flight.

However, Leeds’ supposed interest is caveated by the fact that multiple Premier League clubs would also be looking at Trafford. It’s no secret that Newcastle United have been long-term admirers of the Englishman.

Lucas Perri’s Leeds United days are numbered amid James Trafford interest

The sudden emergence of Leeds’ interest in Trafford, but more generally the goalkeeper position itself, does strongly suggest the writing is on the wall for Lucas Perri.

Signed for £15.6million from Lyon, Perri hasn’t had a great season. However, his impact on our FA Cup run cannot be understated. He’s a massive reason we’re heading to Wembley this month after two successful penalty shootouts. Not only that, but he produced a string of stunning saves against West Ham on Easter Sunday.

That being said, he’s been pushed to second choice by Karl Darlow in the league. And, with interest surfacing late in the January window from Besiktas, I can see the club being open to cashing in.

Perri could command a decent fee off the back of helping us in a historic FA Cup run. Consequently, it bankrolls a ‘keeper like Trafford.

Plainly put, you don’t want to sign Trafford if you’re planning to persist with Perri on the books.

It would be a shame if someone so integral to a great Leeds memory is brutally cast aside in the summer. Getting this far in the FA Cup has been a once-in-a-generation feat for Leeds. Although, a club has to be ruthless in pursuit of progress, the ‘keeper position is the standout.
